I had the unusual and spectacular privilege of viewing the latest Tarantino film in a drive in movie. Situated near a beach the atmosphere was positively retro as the film itself.
Part of a double play in the USA this film showed as a single play (of two films) at a drive in on the Mediterranean. The American audience was blessed with Grind house and added Robert Rodriguez’s incredible film to make it a real drive in double feature thriller.
Death Proof is a horror classic from the past. The style and colorations along with scratchy cheesy cuts bring real nightmares to life again. The story revolves around Stunt driver Mike, played by Kurt Russell, as an aged psychopathic killer stunt driver whose rocks get off on killing hot rod babes.
He works his trade out of a car fitted so that no matter how bad the accident the driver cannot be killed. Now you get the title “Death Proof” which was bent to fit Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror blood fest.
The film is filled with amazing scenes, crashes, and there is one part where it re-plays the death of each car passenger in slow mo, over and over. It is total gore and done in cheapo-color grain to great effect.
The twists in the story as Stuntman Mike gets turned on his tail and stomped into a whimpering dog, but you have to see this. It is one of Tarantino’s best.
